Apply for a Permit to Restrict Traffic

For any action that involves the use or restriction of public road space, you must obtain a permit from the local traffic authority.

Such measures include:

• road construction projects
• erecting scaffolding or storing construction materials
• Events

You may not begin the work until you have received the permit.

You are responsible for informing the public about the measures.

Along with the permit, the competent authority will specify the following in a traffic regulation order:

• how you must cordon off and mark the work site
• whether and how you must restrict, divert, and regulate traffic
• how you must mark any detour routes

The order ensures the safety of workers and road users. It also ensures that traffic is not disrupted more than necessary.

You need a traffic regulation order for:

• the complete or partial closure of a roadway, as well as for
• work that affects bike paths or sidewalks.

If you apply for a traffic restriction for a work site, you must designate a site manager.

If the measure lasts longer than the requested period, you must apply for an extension of the measure before the approved time expires.

In the event of an accident requiring emergency measures, contact the responsible police station directly.

Requirements

• You can demonstrate a legitimate interest.
• You do not compromise traffic safety or disproportionately interfere with traffic.
• You do not disproportionately restrict public use.
• In the case of traffic lane restrictions due to a work site: As the person responsible for a traffic regulation order, you hold the certificate “Guideline on Framework Conditions for the Required Expertise in Traffic Safety at Road Work Sites” (MVAS).
