Apply for an operating license for a model aircraft as a member of an air sports association

The operation of model aircraft in an air sports association or model flying club is possible under certain conditions.
The prerequisite is that flight operations are carried out in accordance with established association rules and that a corresponding official permit has been issued. However, basic safety requirements must always be complied with.

If you want to fly a model aircraft with a take-off weight of more than 2 kilograms, you need special knowledge. This includes safe handling of the model, basic knowledge of aviation law and knowledge of the local airspace structure. Before your first flight, you must attend a training course organized by your association. The certificate of participation is valid for five years and must be carried when flying.

An official permit is also required for certain model aircraft. This applies to models with a take-off weight of more than 12 kilograms, models with rocket propulsion (with more than 20 grams of propellant) and models with combustion engines if they are operated closer than 1.5 kilometers from residential areas. Permission is also required for flights at night.

The aviation authority of the country in which the flight is to take place is responsible for issuing such a permit.

Regulations on nature conservation and environmental protection as well as protection against noise and other environmental impacts continue to apply regardless of this and must always be complied with.

At model airfields: The club's existing ascent permit applies here.

On "greenfield sites": Flying is also permitted here within the framework of the association as long as the safety regulations (distances, proof of knowledge, liability, weight and propulsion limits) are observed.

Requirements

Steps to obtain an operating license as an association member in Bremen:

1. provide proof of membership: You must be an active member of a model flying club that belongs to the DMFV (Deutscher Modellflieger Verband) or the MFSD (Modellflugsportverband Deutschland).
2. follow the rules of the association: By becoming a member, you recognize the association's operating rules. For example, these often permit altitudes of up to 762 meters (2,500 ft) in airspace G, provided there are no other restrictions.
