Authentication of copies/transcripts

Due to the current situation, please refer to the Information on the Citizen's Office home page.

Notarization certifies that the copy is identical in content to the original document. Notarization does not certify the authenticity or validity of the original.

This service is offered exclusively under municipal jurisdiction. Your request can therefore only be processed if you have your main residence in Bremen.

The Bürgeramt certifies copies if

  • the original was issued by a German authority, or
  • the copy is required for submission to a German authority.

The original must be presented for this purpose.

Not to be certified:

  • registry office documents (birth, marriage, death certificates etc.)
  • Copies from official registers
  • Last Wills
  • Documents on inheritance law and real estate matters
  • Court Decisions
  • Association and commercial register excerpts
  • affidavits
  • General powers of attorney
  • Documents concerning private law or required for private use

If you wish to have copies of the above documents certified, please contact a notary public.

There are schools that certify the certificates issued there free of charge or at a lower cost. However, this can be obtained directly from the school secretariat.

Coin-operated photocopiers are available in the BürgerServiceCenters for making copies.

What documents do I need?

  • Original
  • identity card/passport

If a German identity card/passport is to be authenticated, a written proof of what this authentication is required for must be brought along.
