Legal bases

More information

The driver's license office is prohibited from issuing a new driver's license before the expiration of the court-imposed ban period. A possibly required medical-psychological examination is also only possible after the expiry of the court-imposed ban period. In the event of a revocation, no motor vehicle may be driven until the driver's license office has issued a new driver's license.

After the expiry of the ban period, there is no automatic entitlement to a new driving license. The driving license office checks and decides whether and under which conditions a new driving license can be issued.

If there are doubts about suitability, a medical-psychological examination (MPU) or a specialist medical examination will be ordered. If there are additional qualification doubts, a practical test must be taken.

What is the procedure after a revocation for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs?
Please contact the Driver's License Office to find out what measures are required in your individual case.

What is the procedure after a revocation for driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 1.6 or more per mille?
A medical-psychological examination is mandatory. Depending on the results of the examination, it may also be necessary to attend a retraining course. Please contact the driver's license office for clarification of your individual case.

What is the procedure for a revocation due to failure to attend an advanced seminar?
The license can only be reinstated after participation in the postgraduate seminar. Please contact the driver's license office to find out all the requirements in your individual case.

This list is not exhaustive. Further information can be obtained from the Driver's License Office.

Additional information:

You can apply for a certificate of good conduct online in advance via the Federal Office of Justice. If you request this at the driver's license office 2-3 weeks before the appointment, the certificate of good conduct will usually be available at the appointment. If the request is only made by the driver's license office, the processing time will be extended accordingly.

Licenses are issued for different periods of time depending on the class:

  • Classes A, A1, B, S, BE, L, M and T: indefinitely
  • Classes C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE and D1E: for a limited period of five years in each case.

Details on the renewal of temporary driving licenses can be found under the service "Renewal of a temporary driving license". You can find the link to this under "More information" - "Where can I find out more?".
