Have your address changed on your ID card

Online:

If you have registered your new place of residence online via the electronic residence registration (eWA) and the registration authority has checked the data, you will receive an e-mail. The address update in your user account can now be completed.

• To do this, visit the online service again.
• To update your address data on the ID card, the online service will redirect you to the AusweisApp and update the address data stored on the chip of the ID card. All you need is the so-called CAN printed on the ID card. This is the six-digit access number on the front of the ID card, to the right of the validity date.
• As soon as you have updated your ID card online, you will automatically receive a letter from Bundesdruckerei by post with an address sticker for your ID card.
• Finally, stick the address sticker with your new address over the old address on your ID card.

In person on site:

If you have already registered at your new place of residence but the address has not yet been changed on your ID card, you can do this at one of the BürgerServiceCenters.

• You can go to one of the BürgerServiceCenters during the opening hours of the short application counters.
  
  • You do not need an appointment for this.
• You present your valid identity card.
• The registration office will affix an official address sticker with your new address over the old address on your ID card and update the chip.
• You can authorize another person in writing to change the address on your ID card at one of the BürgerServiceCenters.

What deadlines must be paid attention to?

You must have the address changed on your ID card immediately after the change of address or change it yourself online.

How long does it take to process

Personal: processing is immediate.

Online: If you have registered online via the electronic residence registration (eWA) and your details and submitted documents are complete, we will provide you with a registration confirmation in your user account for download within 10 working days. You will then receive the address sticker for your ID card by post.
