The Port Medical Service consists of two subject areas, the actual port medical service, and travel and tropical medicine (see there), including the yellow fever vaccination centre in Bremerhaven.

The port medical service is the first port of call for all health issues arising on sea and inland waterway vessels, both for seafarers and passengers, as well as for shipowners and ship agents.

Protection against infection, assessment of disease and other hygiene from ships, release of ships, issuing of certificates, taking of drinking water samples, inspection of ships' pharmacies, patient care on ships and seafarers' welfare, including advice under the Brussels Convention.
