Registration at a vocational school

The vocational school forms the school-based part of the dual training program. Together with the training companies/the dual partners, it prepares students for a qualification at level 4 of the German Qualifications Framework (DQR 4).

Vocational schools provide the school-based part of dual training, which consists of practical training in the company and theoretical training in the vocational school. Vocational schools play an important role in this, as they ensure that trainees acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in their profession.

The duration of the training is 2-3.5 years, depending on the vocational training.

Admission requirements for attending the vocational school are an apprenticeship relationship including a training contract with a company in Bremen.

As a rule, trainees attend vocational school two days a week or in blocks to learn the theoretical principles of their profession. The teaching content is predominantly structured in learning fields, tailored to the respective training occupation and oriented to the requirements of the labor market. The dual system offers the advantage that trainees gain practical experience in the company right from the start, while at the same time learning the theoretical fundamentals at the vocational school. This allows them to put what they have learned directly into practice and deepen their skills and knowledge. The trainees are bound by a training contract with the company and receive remuneration.

In Germany, there are currently around 320 different apprenticeship occupations offered in various sectors. In Bremen, around 140 dual training occupations are taught at vocational schools. In occupations that are not trained at vocational schools in Bremen, there is an agreement by the KMK for training in other federal states.

In addition to the school-based part of the dual training, interesting additional qualifications can be acquired at the vocational schools in Bremen, such as the advanced technical college entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife), European technician (Europatechniker/ Europatechnikerin) or European business management assistant (Europakaufmann/ Europakauffrau). In some cases, the vocational schools in Bremen are also part of a dual study program.
