The range of topics covered by official statistics is broad: Population, social affairs, the economy, finance or the environment are just some of the overarching themes for which data surveys are regularly conducted. The surveys are conducted in a variety of ways. The cooperation of a large number of institutions, companies and individuals is required. These are invited to participate in writing. 

Participation in official statistics surveys is usually not voluntary but required by law. The effort for the respondents is kept as low as possible: Modern online reporting procedures help to ease the burden on respondents and ensure data processing without media discontinuity.
