Residence permit on humanitarian grounds


If you are living in Bremen with the status of toleration and it is impossible for you to leave Germany for a longer period of time for reasons that are not your fault, you can apply for a residence permit at the Migration Office.
This also applies if you have been living tolerated in Bremen for several years and you have integrated well / sustainably.

If you are living in Bremen with the status of Duldung and it is impossible for you to leave Germany for a longer period of time for reasons that are not your fault, you can apply for a residence permit at the Migration Office.

Such reasons can be, for example

  • that a safe return to your home country is not possible for you,
  • that you are so seriously ill for a longer period of time that you are not able to travel,
  • that you are responsible for the care of a child in Bremen or are needed to care for a close relative.
  • A residence permit for humanitarian reasons can also be considered, for example, if you are
  • are a young person or under 21 years of age and
  • have been living in Germany for at least 4 years and are successfully attending school or training.
  • Or if you have lived in Germany for at least eight years or, if you live together with a minor child, for at least six years and have integrated yourself sustainably in Germany.

Further requirements are that there is no doubt about your identity, that you are free from criminal prosecution and that, if you are an adult, you are able to secure your own livelihood if possible or make demonstrable efforts to do so, unless this should be impossible for you due to raising children or illness.
