Sale of motor vehicles - notice of sale

Procedure

The last registered owner of the vehicle is obliged to notify the registration authority of the sale of the vehicle immediately - in writing or in person.

Notes:

  • It is important that the buyer confirms in writing receipt of the old vehicle title and vehicle registration certificate or the newly issued registration certificate Part II and Part I, the registration license plates as well as the inspection report on the last general inspection, the test certificate on the last exhaust emission test and, if applicable, acceptance confirmations on modifications to the vehicle.
  • If the vehicle is sold abroad, it is advisable to deregister it before the sale so that the keeper obligations (motor vehicle liability insurance, motor vehicle tax) are terminated. The registration authority is usually not in a position to initiate compulsory deregistration measures abroad if the purchaser does not register the vehicle in his name.
  • The purchaser has the option of taking the vehicle abroad with an export license plate.
